WhoNu Cookies

Obnoxious right? And I thought it was a total gimmick. Turns out WhoNu cookies are absolutely delicious. They taste somewhere between Oreos and off-brand Oreos, and they are PACKED with loads of healthy stuff, which is cray cray to me:


Plus, each 3 cookie serving is only 160 calories. To fix a chocolate craving, I can definitely deal with that. My mind is totally boggled as to how they do it, but these cookies rock.

Last night I hit up step class after a week-long YMCA hiatus. It felt so good to sweat again but WOW did I get my butt kicked. It was better than the FIRST time I went to step because I knew the choreography, but similar because I was practically wheezing by the end. Wowza.

I’m thinking I’ll hit up power today. I’m starting to see some definition in my shoulders which is the coolest thing EVER.

Social Media Presentation

The speaker I went to on Friday was EPIC. I learned so much that my head is STILL spinning. Here is a wee bit of a bio on Gary Vaynerchuck:

In February of 2006, Vaynerchuk launched “Wine Library TV,” a daily video blog about wine. To develop an audience, he turned to the social web. He joined the online conversation by becoming an active member of blogs and forums, and he used tools such as Facebook and Twitter to connect with consumers online.

As word spread of his informal and unorthodox approach to wine, “Wine Library TV” grew to garner 90,000 daily viewers and featured celebrity guests including hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, Travel Channel star Samantha Brown and Food Network host Ingrid Hoffmann. Vaynerchuk made numerous national television appearances as a wine expert on shows such as “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,”  “The Today Show,” and “Nightline.”

Vaynerchuk launched a second blog,, where he dispenses business advice and comments on emerging technologies and cultural trends. As his following grew, he became one of the first to reach Facebook’s friend limit, and he accumulated more than 800,000 followers on Twitter. His first book, “Crush It! Why Now is the Time to Cash in on your Passion,” was released in 2009 and debuted as a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller. Also in 2009, he and his brother A.J. co-founded VaynerMedia, a consulting agency.


So basically this dude knows what he is talking about. I think it’s pretty seldom that you listen to a speaker who:

A) Knows what he is talking about

B) Is passionate about what he is talking about

C) Can communicate it all effectively to an audience


With Gary, all these stars aligned. One of the first thing Gary warns when he arrives on stage is that he uses inappropriate language. This perked my ears RIGHT UP. Personally, I think the word f*ck is f*cking hilarious, so I was on the edge of my seat pretty much the whole time. But it wasn’t just that he was cursing–it was that he was obviously so passionate about what he was talking about. It was like he was so excited, he couldn’t control what was coming out of his mouth.
Gary mentioned a lot of things that stuck with me during his speech. Here are a few of my favorite bullets:

  • It makes more sense financially for a ski company to find you on Twitter, see you are going on a ski trip next week, send you free skis and gain you as a new customer THAT way then to advertise using “old” mediums, like billboards and TV commercials. He made the point that most TV shows are now DVR’d, and most people fast forward through the commercials; and, let’s be honest, most cars you pass on the interstate have people texting and driving in them, so they aren’t even watching the road! Yet big companies are still spending money to advertise in these ways. Why do that when you can skip the middle man and go directly to the consumer?
  • The search page on Twitter is, in Gary’s opinion, the most useful page for any business. Companies should be constantly searching their name to see what people are saying. They should be talking directly to consumers asking why they tweeted that their pizza suck, or thanking them for tweeting their clothes rock. Creating that relationship is what good business is all about and IT’S SO SIMPLE.
  • The reason social media + businesses gets a bad rep is because everyone is “trying to close on the first move like a 19 year old boy” (<- genius). They see someone tweeting about how they need new shoes and tweet back, Come to our store and get 20% off! It’s irritating and overwhelming. These businesses need to pay it forward. For example, when Gary was promoting his book Crush It! that is exactly what he did. He answered thousands of tweets, emails and questions and gave back. In return, people trusted him and wanted to support him. He didn’t say, Hey, buy my book, it’s great! He said, How can I help YOU?

Woo! I hope I did Gary justice with my little blurbs. I get so excited about social media–it’s so interesting and it’s JUST BEGINNING. Can you believe some people still think it’s a fad? It’s the future!

Thankful November

Today I’m thankful that Gary Vaynerchuck has written two books that I will no doubt be reading over Christmas break. Holler.
